Ingredients:
2 lb fish cubes (I used kingfish)
1 medium onion chopped
3 tomatoes crushed
3 green chili slices
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
1 tbsp kashmiri chili powder (use regular if you like spicy)
1 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp garam masala
1 tsp fennel seed
1 tsp cumin seed
1 tsp dried kasuri methi
1 cup mustard oil
1 cup of water
Cilantro for garnish
Salt
Extra seasoning for the fish fry
1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
1/2 tbsp chili powder
Pinch of salt
Directions:
Wash the fish properly and then add 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder, chili powder, and salt. Heat oil in a pan and then add fish. Fry both sides almost 50 percent and then take it out of the oil. In the same oil add fennel seed and cumin seed. After it stops spluttering add chopped onions and green chili and cook till almost brown and then add ginger garlic paste. Let it cook until it changes color and stops sticking to the pan. Then add crushed tomatoes, chili powder, turmeric, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Cover the pan with a lid and cook until oil oozes out. Then add the fried fish pieces and 1/2 cup of water and cook for 5 mins or until oil separates. The gravy should become thick and change the color to dark brown. Then take 1 tbsp kasuri methi and rub it between your palm and add the powder to fish and give it a shake. Close the lid for 2 mins and then your fish masala is ready. Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
